2023 Design Trends You Can Skip
The year is about halfway over and I’ll be honest with you- these 2023 design trends are quickly making their exit. As an Austin- based interior designer I say- don’t let the door hit ya on the way out!
Let’s dive in to some interior design trends that need to be rethought as we look forward to 2024 design style.
Grey, white, and Blah.
Recently we’re seeing a lot of neutrals- beige, grey, white and more- in everything from kids toys to home design. An experienced Austin interior designer is going to tell you this “sad beige” trend is one to keep away from. Don’t be afraid to add a little pop of color to your Austin remodel- which can easily be done with the right wallpaper, throw, or even furniture. Life is for living, after all!
Impractical Design
I’ve been seeing a lot of dining chairs for dining room makeovers lately that are pretty stiff and uncomfortable. As a local Austin interior decorator with many years of experience under my belt I say this: liveable luxury is possible and together we can achieve it.
Modern Farmhouse
The Austin area has seen a lot of the modern farmhouse trend- perhaps, too much? It makes sense people would be drawn to this style- especially in a city like Austin that’s surrounded by the hill country. However, Austin interior designers and Austin design firms have the ability to guide a client away from a literal theme (which can get old or out of date quickly) into one that’s based on your inspiration but perhaps contains unique Austin design elements that will ensure the longevity of your home design in Austin.
Unsustainable Design
Thankfully people looking to renovate their home in Austin or redesign an Austin home are beginning to look toward more sustainable design opportunities and leaving the unsustainable ones behind. This ranges from green materials to buying textiles, fabrics, tiles, wallpaper, furniture, and other hand crafted items from local Austin artisans and local Austin shops. As someone who works hard to create the essential Austin aesthetic, I fully support leaving unsustainable design in the rear view.
The minimalist Kitchen
If you know me, you know I’m an Austin interior decorator who will defend livable luxury until the end. Minimalist kitchens do have a certain appeal- clean, clear countertops with everything hidden gives a sense of calm and control. You know what it’s not giving? Sitting around drinking coffee with your family Sunday morning. Your kids iPads plugged in while they’re eating at the island. A door mat next to the doggie door to catch all those wonderful things dogs bring inside. Austin design is about approachability while being beautiful, so let’s leave those unrealistic kitchens to hotels and Airbnb’s.
Make it Your Own
Most importantly, make the space your own. Working with an interior designer in Austin will help you to understand how to balance the right elements in your home to come up with something you will be proud of and will enjoy for many years to come.
